12:30 PM WMC presents a Featured Keynote Q&A with Seymour Stein
Ocean Ballroom 1C Ready Room - Rivo Alto

In music business legend Seymour Stein’s lifelong adventure with rock & roll, he has been prominently engaged in wave after wave of popular music’s successive cycles of taste. His ability to divine what’s great in each new generation of music has made Stein one of the rare record company men whose appreciation and approbation is sought not only as a means to a career and money, but also as an artistic accolade. His label, Sire, started by Seymour and producer/ songwriter/ artist, Richard Gottehrer in 1966, is a crucial example of the evolution of an American indie. Early bands that kept the label afloat included Sire's first million sellers, Phocus and three bands originally licensed from EMI in the UK; Climax Blues Band, Renaissaince, and Barclay James Harvest. Seymour was influential in helping legendary British blues producer Mike Vernon start the Blue Horizon label, for which he was rewarded with an opportunity to take a 50% share in the label. Blue Horizon, was the original home to Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Christine McVie's original band Chicken Shack, and her first solo recordings as well. Blue Horizon also boasted an amazing roster featuring performances by many of the all time great Blues artists ranging from Furry Lewis right up to Otis Spann.
Starting with the New Wave explosion out of CBGB's in the mid 1970's with the Ramones, Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, Flaming Groovies, Richard Hell and The Voidoids, The Deadboys, The Saints and Radio Birdman, Sire evolved into one of the most important and influential labels in the business with a roster that included: The Pretenders, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Yaz, The Assembly, Recoil, Madonna, Ice- T, The Cure, The Cult, Soft Cell, Plastic Bertrand, Everything But the Girl, Modern English, Echo and The Bunnymen, Aztec Camera, Madness, Telex, The Normal, The English Beat, Book Of Love, kd lang, The Replacements, M, Laid Back, the Smiths and Morrissey, Jonathan Richman, Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Dinosaur Jr., Seal, The Mighty Lemondrops, the Rezillos, Johnny Thunders, Blanc Mange, The Bluebells, Ofra Haza, My Bloody Valentine, B-Movie, Primal Scream, Ride, Throwing Muses, Belly, Lou Reed, Brian Wilson, Martini Ranch, Tin Tin, D-Ream, Bomb The Bass, S-Express, Betty Boo, Little Jimmy Scott, Deborah Harry, Aphex Twins, Ocean Blue, Boy George, Ministry, Men Without Hats, The Farm, Morcheeba, Paul Oakenfold, Spacehog, Kid Creole And The Coconuts, Barenaked Ladies, Guster, the Von Bondies and Tommy Page. Current roster including acts signed not only by Stein, but also Craig Aaronson and Ryan Whalley include Against Me!, Tegan and Sarah, the Veronicas, Regina Spector, HIM, Foxy Shazam, Never Shout Never, Lights and Ximena. Summing up his career in a recent book, On the Record, by Guy Oseary, Stein observed: “Sire started as an independent, and I still run it as an independent, even though the label has been owned by WB for over twenty years. Independent labels have been, and continue to be, at the forefront of every important change or trend in new music. I’m an independent at heart. Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow: “Be True to Your School.””
On that subject Stein recently remarked, about trends and genres in music launched by indies including Jazz and Country. Rhythm and Blues by labels like Atlantic, Chess, King, Specialty, Imperial, Vee-Jay, Duke. Rockabilly, first and foremost by Sun Records, Rock & Roll by the classic labels like Liberty, Cameo and Cadence. Folk; Elektra and Vanguard. Rap with Def Jam, Interscope, and Tommy Boy in the forefront right up to the present time. The first ballot of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame was loaded with 41 potential candidates of which 39 started their careers on indie labels. The first inductees included Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Sam Cooke, James Brown, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Everly Brothers, Ray Charles - all from indie labels and Buddy Holly, the only artist whose first recordings with The Crickets were released on The Coral and Brunswick labels subsidiaries of Major label Decca.

Matt is also the owner of the famous "Setai Recording Studio" in Miami which has seen clients like Mariah Carey, Timbaland, Chris Cornell & Lil John. Ocean Tower Ballroom 1A Ready Room - Rivo Alto

WMC presents a featured discussion with the legendary Carl Cox. A musical ambassador since he was in short trousers, a professional DJ since his early teens, a veteran of acid house and a champion of techno, Carl Cox emits a love of his work that is dangerously infectious. Check him when he’s behind the turntables and you can’t mistake his ecstatic visage, dripping with sweat as his head bobs up and down to the beat, his hands pumping the air whenever they’re not manipulating the turntables, his body swaying back and forth, frequently taking to the mike to share word on the latest underground tune he’s about to break. With his Global radio show, his label Intec Digital , current Global Underground album ‘Black Rock Desert’, his return to Ibiza’s Space for the ninth year in a row and his highly anticipated new artist album, ‘All Roads Lead To The Dancefloor’, Carl Cox shows no signs of slowing down. You name it, Carl’s been there and done it, but he’s never lost sight of the point of it: playing music, breaking tunes, spreading love, celebrating life.

4:00 PM The Evolution of EDM Culture Part 2
Pompeii

The Electro genre has reached a broader American audience in the last two years. Stephen Alex Vasquez documented the scene and its participants in 2009. The film explores contemporary EDM and what it will eventually evolve into. It seems that every other day a new remix is popping up on the internet, how does this affect marketing for other independent artists? Do they welcome the remixes or oppose them? Is music overload possible? What will eventually happen when all these budding producers grab a hold of producing programs such as Pro Tools and develop their own remixes week in and week out? Will the remix itself become obsolete? Will original tracks have to step up to the forefront rather than recede into the background?Join us for a premiere of “The Electro Wars”, followed by a featured Q & A with artists from the film.
