WMC proudly presents a Featured Keynote Q&A with Seymour Stein
In music business legend Seymour Stein’s lifelong adventure with rock & roll, he has been prominently engaged in wave after wave of popular music’s successive cycles of taste. His ability to divine what’s great in each new generation of music has made Stein one of the rare record company men whose appreciation and approbation is sought not only as a means to a career and money, but also as an artistic accolade. His label, Sire, started by Seymour and producer/ songwriter/ artist, Richard Gottehrer in 1966, is a crucial example of the evolution of an American indie. Early bands that kept the label afloat included Sire's first million sellers, Phocus and three bands originally licensed from EMI in the UK; Climax Blues Band, Renaissaince, and Barclay James Harvest. Seymour was influential in helping legendary British blues producer Mike Vernon start the Blue Horizon label, for which he was rewarded with an opportunity to take a 50% share in the label. Blue Horizon, was the original home to Peter Green’s Fleetwod Mac, Christine McVie's original band Chicken Shack, and her first solo recordings as well. Blue Horizon also boasted an amazing roster featuring performances by many of the all time great Blues artists ranging from Furry Lewis right up to Otis Spann.
Starting with the New Wave explosion out of CBGB's in the mid 1970's with the Ramones, Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, Flaming Groovies, Richard Hell and The Voidoids, The Deadboys, The Saints and Radio Birdman, Sire evolved into one of the most important and influential labels in the business with a roster that included: The Pretenders, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Yaz, The Assembly, Recoil, Madonna, Ice- T, The Cure, The Cult, Soft Cell, Plastic Bertrand, Everything But the Girl, Modern English, Echo and The Bunnymen, Aztec Camera, Madness, Telex, The Normal, The English Beat, Book Of Love, kd lang, The Replacements, M, Laid Back, the Smiths and Morrissey, Jonathan Richman, Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Dinosaur Jr., Seal, The Mighty Lemondrops, the Rezillos, Johnny Thunders, Blanc Mange, The Bluebells, Ofra Haza, My Bloody Valentine, B-Movie, Primal Scream, Ride, Throwing Muses, Belly, Lou Reed, Brian Wilson, Martini Ranch, Tin Tin, D-Ream, Bomb The Bass, S-Express, Betty Boo, Little Jimmy Scott, Deborah Harry, Aphex Twins, Ocean Blue, Boy George, Ministry, Men Without Hats, The Farm, Morcheeba, Paul Oakenfold, Spacehog, Kid Creole And The Coconuts, Barenaked Ladies, Guster, the Von Bondies and Tommy Page. Current roster including acts signed not only by Stein, but also Craig Aaronson and Ryan Whalley include Against Me!, Tegan and Sarah, the Veronicas, Regina Spector, HIM, Foxy Shazam, Never Shout Never, Lights and Ximena. Summing up his career in a recent book, On the Record, by Guy Oseary, Stein observed: “Sire started as an independent, and I still run it as an independent, even though the label has been owned by WB for over twenty years. Independent labels have been, and continue to be, at the forefront of every important change or trend in new music. I’m an independent at heart. Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow: “Be True to Your School.””
